Hello to all the new subscribers!  Welcome back, old friends!
==============================================

1) Peeking thru WINDOWS  “Measly Worms”

As you all have heard, this past week saw further attacks
on email systems worldwide.  I debated a short while,
and then chose to send an alert to subscribers, when
I first became aware of the “ILOVEYOU” worm.

While I don’t intend on becoming a full-time
“early warning system”, in this case I felt the ferocity and
swiftness of this worm demanded some action on my part.
With any luck, that warning did help a few of you.

The ILY worm is only one example of a particularly nasty
variety that requires MS Virtual Basic Scripting to run.
Though the average user does not need VBS, it is typically
installed and active on most computers running
Windows 95/98.  If you remove VBS, some (very few)
web pages might not display as intended.

As of this writing, there have been identified at least 7
different variants of the ILY worm, all of which require VBS
to run.  Many more are expected, and virus scanners can't
always catch these things, as was amply demonstrated this
past week.

Therefore, it would be prudent for all readers to disable
VBS on their computers.  This is a simple way to protect
yourself from future worms of this type.

Included below are methods for users of both
Windows 95 and Windows 98.

REMOVING VIRTUAL BASIC SUPPORT – WINDOWS 95
= = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = =
  I) Open "My Computer"

 II). Select "View/Options"

III) Select “File types” tab.  Scroll down and select
     “VBScript Script File”.
(don’t see it? – you can stop now and cancel)

IV) Click Remove button.  If you get a confirmation
     dialogue box, answer Yes.

VBS association is now removed!

REMOVING VIRTUAL BASIC SUPPORT – WINDOWS 98

   I) Click Start Menu button, then select “Settings”

  II) Select “Control Panel”

 III) Select “Add/Remove Programs”

 IV) Select “Windows Setup” tab

  V) Double-click Accessories

VI) Scroll down until you see the selection
“Windows Scripting Host”.  Click on checkbox to
to remove check and turn off option.

VII) Click OK buttons.  Complete!

2) FANTASTIC FREE FEATURED FILE!
    “Copernic2000” [2750 Kb/EXE]

There are billions of web pages on the Internet – no one
knows for sure how many.  Even the largest search
engines and directories contain at best only an estimated
15% of the available pages – there is no such thing as a
“comprehensive” listing of sites on the Net.

This can be a real problem when you’re looking for something.
Rather than using a single source to search, you can use this
week’s file to search up to 19 of the largest search
engines and directories available today, SIMULTANEOUSLY!

While this is a large file (tipping the scales at 2.75 meg),
I’m sure you’ll find that the time it takes to download will
quickly be repaid by faster, more comprehensive, and more
accurate searches in the future!

3) SEEN THESE SITES?  “Darwin Awards / Mr. WakeUp”

Darwin Awards is dedicated to commemorating what remains
of individuals who contribute to the improvement of our
gene pool by removing themselves from it via some
really stupid means. Each month, this site features those
who self-terminate, rarely on purpose.  Stories like:
“Larry and his friend Silas decided to reenact the
William Tell scene where the famous archer is forced to
test his prowess...” and “To catch a heap of fish, a
43-year-old man connected cables to the main power
supply of his home, and trailed the end into the river...”

“I Forgot” - never use that excuse again – and you don’t
have to improve your memory - iPing services will do
all the remembering for you!  Mr. WakeUp, Ms. Reminder,
and Dr. Dose, are just three of the many free services
you’ll find at this site.  iPing, the self-proclaimed
“Time Sensitive Notification Portal”, will help keep
your ducks in a row with phone and email reminders of those
significant events in your life!

4) EMAIL FUNNIES “Snake” [109 Kb/EXE]

Sweet little game!  Use your arrow keys to control your
snake as it chases the “apple” around the screen.  Apples
can cause your snake to grow, so be careful not to run
into walls, or yourself!  A fun addition to your
games collection!

5) The MOUS Hole  “Reduced Stress MOUS Exams”

Academic providers of the MOUS exam are eligible to
offer free retakes of MOUS exams during the months
of May and June.  This means that if you fail to pass your
first attempt at an exam, you can retake the same exam
at no cost!

If you’ve been thinking about taking an exam, now would
be the time to take advantage of this opportunity.  Note:
this offer is only provided by academic testing centers,
all testing centers are not participating.  Contact your
nearest testing center for more information.

6) THEY SAID IT

”The trouble with unemployment is that the minute you
wake up in the morning you’re on the job”. - Slappy White

7) HODGEPODGE – “Short Take One”

Visit our newest website feature – the Short Take.

If you’ve ever “prairie dogged” in a “cube farm”, you should
take a look, before you become a “stress puppy”!
And be sure to check out this week’s new Photo Funny,
then read about the Long Memory of the Law.
