1) Peeking thru WINDOWS "Mice in
the Basement"
Ever since the rise of Windows and the decline of
DOS, the humble mouse has joined the keyboard
and become an indispensable input device.
For all
the time we spend manipulating the mouse, not many
of us have optimized the little critter for our
working style.
Try spending a few minutes today exploring the
various mouse configuration options available.
Start by accessing Mouse Properties: Click on
the Mouse icon found under Start, Settings,
Control Panel.
The features available in your Mouse Properties
dialogue box are dependent upon the mouse type
and driver software installed. You’ll
probably
find that you can change such options as: adding
cursor trails to increase visibility; change
size/speed, color and acceleration of your cursor;
even change to a “Lefty” orientation!
This is
also where you’ll find the controls to alter your
double-click speed settings, if need be.
2) FANTASTIC FILE FIND! "A Leg up
on Legos" [579 Kb/EXE]
Year in and year out, Legos Building Blocks were a
frequent request on my children’s Christmas lists.
Larger and more imaginative creations were formed
as their collection of blocks grew.
There were two problems that arose with having a
house full of the colorful little building components.
The first – blocks joined together were frequently
too difficult to separate for little fingers.
The
second - imprinting the little buggers in the bottom
of your feet in the middle of the night!
Here’s a possible solution – Blockcad is an creative
computer alternative. With an
overwhelming number of
different pieces in every Windows color, intuitive
controls, all-view perspectives, and features
that are physically impossible to duplicate in
the real world make this file a steal at the price –
the author requests you mail him ONE real Lego
piece as compensation. No busted
fingernails,
no punctured feet – just a lot of fun!

3) SEEN THESE SITES? "Where To
Go/What To Eat"
Purge those doubts when traveling to new
destinations. Just in time for vacation
travel,
NFTB presents a “must-visit” side trip that will
have you printing its pages (for several reasons)
before you pass through. This site
addresses an
issue any seasoned traveler will recognize.
Tourists can eliminate any suspicions about the
proper places “to go” when in
embarrassing situations - for example, if you want
to visit the facilities at the World Trade Center
Windows on the World, know you must be dressed
appropriately – jackets & ties.
No buts about it, another unusual rest stop
on the Information Highway!

Onward to more appetizing thoughts. For
those of
you whose idea of relaxation favors a barbeque
in the back yard, I recommend our second site.
With
60 barbeque sauce recipes (of 73,722 total!) you’ll
find a new tasty variant for the next rack of ribs or
chicken you toss on the pyre!
But there’s more than an abundance of recipes!
You’ll find a quick and easy measurement conversion
utility link on the home page, among the vast array
of culinary links provided. The feature
I found most
fascinating is the SafetyAlerts Food Safety listings;
during a recent 3-day period there were 10 different
food-related recalls listed! Info you
WON’T find in
your daily newspaper!

4) EMAIL FUNNIES "Bowling Clip" [1389 Kb/MPG]
There’s a clever blending of sports in this
week’s Funny – a commercial video clip:

5) The MOUS Hole - "Building Better Toolbars, Part 3"
We’ve taken a look at customized Office toolbars
in the past two issues. As you’ll remember, begin
the customization by right-clicking a toolbar,
choose Customize, then click & drag your selected
button to its desired position on the toolbar.
A few more interesting buttons I’ve found useful:
Format Category: Change Case and the
Shrink/Grow
Font are both handy, as is Add/Remove
Space Before
Tools Category: Macros and Record/Stop
Macros;
Accept/Reject Changes, Customize
Toolbars!
Borders Category: Border Style and
Shading
Of course, the buttons that you should add are
going to be dictated by the type of tasks you
perform in Office. My hope is that
you’re now a
bit more comfortable with changing and rearranging
toolbars. Remember, if there’s a button
you don’t
use, replace it with one that’s more useful!
6) THEY SAID IT
"Education
makes a people easy to lead, but
difficult to drive; easy to govern but impossible
to enslave.” -- Lord Brougham
7) HODGEPODGE
This week’s Photo Funny exposes a recently revealed
hidden Office 2000 Settings dialogue box, and read
about the young man who chose the wrong place to
store his toys - earning him Bozo recognition.
