1) Peeking thru WINDOWS "Taskbar
Shortcuts"
A recent question from Marc B., who reads a forwarded
copy of NFTB (remember to subscribe, Marc – that's the
only sure way to guarantee your copy each Wednesday!)
Q: How do I place shortcuts on my taskbar?
A: It's easy to place a shortcut on the taskbar!
Shortcuts can be placed on the
taskbar only in a
specific area however, which can
make it just
a bit tricky. Also, the target area will change,
depending on your individual
setup. Follow
these steps for easy installation:
I) Create the
shortcut on your Desktop.
II) Point to the shortcut, then
click-and-drag it down
onto the taskbar - hold mouse button
- move your
cursor along the toolbar.
III) Any place you see the "NO sign" (slashed circle)
is unavailable... move until you see
an I-beam
indicator - this is an acceptable
area - then
release your mouse button.
Buttons on the taskbar can also be rearranged
easily by click-and-dragging to the desired location.

2) FANTASTIC FILE FIND! "IE NewWindow Button" [26 Kb/EXE]
For Internet Explorer users only, this file effortlessly adds
a much needed toolbar button to IE – Open New Window!
Simply run the download, then open an IE window.
Right-click the toolbar, choose Customize, and you’ll
find a new available button – NewWindow - to make
current.
(note: you might need to click the Add button to have
the
NewWindow button appear.)

3) SEEN THESE SITES? "Kooks
Museum/Profiles In Courage"
”Welcome To The Freeze-Dried
Open for all time and eternity, ceaseless, all knowing and
unchanging.” So opens the front page for
our first site,
and once again, we find ourselves just a few wildflowers
off the beaten path.
Whomever your favorite flavor of kook, you'll find them
lodged somewhere within the virtual walls of this Museum.
Directly off the Lobby, you'll find the Schizophrenic Wing;
and the Conspiracy Corridor (did Stephen King kill John
Lennon on Nixon's order's?) Make a sharp
left for a
quick run through the Hall of Hate, into the Library of
Questionable Scholarship and the Gallery of Gods.
Your tour finishes in the Solution to the World's Problem
Exhibit, where utilizing one simple idea could SOLVE
every problem on earth!
A visit here will make you feel MUCH better about the
person in the next cubicle...

After reading about a few of the stranger residents of
our planet, you deserve a big dollop of uplifting – and
one fine place for this is the Profiles in Courage
pages of HomeofHeroes.com.
HOH.com is an enormous (12,000+ pages) web resource
dedicated to “providing information about patriotism, the
Medal of Honor, and military history”.
Profiles in Courage (“True Stories of American Heroes”)
pages focus on the specific stories of Medal of Honor
winners. Read the absolutely stunning
story of the
conscious objector who received the highest honor that
can be bestowed on any American – and he never fired
a shot! Or the recipient who fought and
paid a high
price - yet wasn’t an American citizen!
Or the submarine
that sank a train!
No matter where in the world you live, you’re sure to
recognize and be moved by the qualities of honor and
bravery described here.

4) EMAIL FUNNIES "TinyElvis" [270 Kb/EXE]
It's been a few week's since I've had a deskmate for
you. This one's for all the Elvis fans
out there, and I
know there are a few! Tiny Elvis can be
programmed
to appear at predetermined time intervals, and has
a phrase bank where you can add your own .wav files.
(see the readme file for
instructions)
"Mahn, jus' look at the size of that
cursor!"

5) The MOUS Hole - "Insert | Name | Paste"
As you can see from the above title, I’m trying a new
method of describing menu selections.
Each menu
item in a sequence will be separated by | spaces | and
a bar, | like so! I’ve feel this
provides a cleaner and
more easily followed interface for instructions. If you
feel strongly one way or another about it, clue me in.
~~~
Last week's Excel tip discussed creating named ranges
for use in formulas, and mentioned that you could simply
type a range name in, in place of the actual range.
An alternative to actually keying in a range name is to
have Excel key it. This is useful for
long or complex
range names – when it's time to use a name, select:
Insert | Name | Paste | Highlight desired Name | Ok
This menu series happens to present us with a nice
way to print a list of the names in your workbook, too.
Select an out-of-the-way cell, then Insert | Name |
Paste | Paste List. This will give you a
complete list
of all Names in your file, and their corresponding
ranges.
7) HODGEPODGE
Drop by the website this week and try out the new
Search feature! I’ve tried several
search tools over the
past few months, and am really pleased with this one,
fueled by Atomz.
Should make finding that particular
tip you remember from a past issue much easier!
This week brings the first dual Photo Funny, for some
reason, the two you’ll see just screamed juxtaposition!
Meanwhile, the Bizarro feature highlights a new
theory
with regard to the extinction of the dinosaurs.
