1) Peeking thru WINDOWS "Read-Only
Files"
Everyone sooner or later has one of those Homer Simpson
D’oh! moments – times that seem head-smackingly
brilliant in their stupidity.
These times usually occur for me when I realize, after
seemingly hours of fruitless searching, that I’ve deleted
a file that I absolutely-needed-right-now!
I’ve learned to reduce those times (and my headaches) by
activating the Read-only attribute for those non-changing
files (ZIP, EXE, and archive, for example) that I want to
save long-term. Any file that is set
read-only will force
Windows to splash an extra prompt warning if you
attempt to delete it. Simple, but
effective – as long as
you read dialogue boxes!
To set a file Read-only, simply
right-click the file,
Properties | General tab | Attributes
- select the
Read-only option | Ok.
Reverse the process if you find at a
later date that
you need to modify the file.
While not a foolproof way to stop a deletion, it should be
cause enough to alert you if one of your desired files
gets caught up in a “trash-sweep.”

2) FANTASTIC FILE FIND!
"CatFish" [153 Kb/EXE]
So, how do I keep track of the thousands of files,
scattered hither-and-thon on countless diskettes,
ZIP cartridges, and CD’s? With this
week’s Fantastic
File Find – CatFish!
CatFish is a compact utility that catalogs your storage
media, then provides for extremely fast searches – by
size, wildcard, or date. CatFish will
calculate total
subdirectory sizes, and lists the date of the newest file
found inside each directory. It also
recognizes and
stores long file names. Finally, it can be used as an
application or document launcher.
If you’re not using a disk cataloger, you’re probably
wasting a lot of time looking for files.
Grab this easy
to use, easy to understand gem today!

5) The MOUS Hole - "Forward & Backward, Front & Back"
Manipulating objects in PowerPoint presentations can
really bring out the creativity in people.
It’s fun to
make complex scenery by combining multiple pieces of
clipart. If you’re not careful, though, you might find
working with all those objects more complicated than
expected.
As you place objects on the slides, you’ll quickly discover
that each object sits on an “invisible layer”. The first item
you place on a slide is the bottom layer, with each
subsequent layer stacked on to create the finished slide.
You can reorder these layered objects by using the Draw
button on the Drawing toolbar. First
select the object
you want to reorder. Then:
A) To bring object to the top of stack:
Draw | Order | Bring to Front
B) To bring object forward one layer only
Draw | Order | Bring Forward
C) To send object to the bottom of stack:
Draw | Order | Send to Back
D) To send object backward one layer only
Draw | Order | Send Backward
E) Objects can also be put in front of or behind text –
Draw | Order | Bring in Front /
Send Behind Text
Experiment with 3 or 4 objects at first, until you’re
comfortable with the commands!

6) THEY SAID IT
”First
learn computer science and all the theory.
Next develop a programming style.
Then forget all that and just hack.”

7) HODGEPODGE
A couple more Homer treats as Photo Funnies, two different
looks inside the Bald One’s noggin. And
- see this week’s
Bozo – a perfume maker’s stunt that was certainly
Homer-worthy! All this and more at:
