1) Peeking thru WINDOWS  "Stretchy Taskbar Areas"

The Windows Taskbar can be a crowded, congested place.
It holds the Start button, Clock, System tray, and buttons
for each open window.  If you’re using the Windows tip for
adding icons to the Taskbar related in the August 8th
issue, you probably have a nice assortment of icons lined
up there, too.

As more items are placed on the Taskbar, Windows will
start to "compress" the buttons, until only the program
icon remains – which can make it difficult to know exactly
what you’re opening when there’s more than one window
of the same application running.

You can resize the visible buttons and icons areas by
click & dragging the handles (vertical bars) – or use this
quick trick – simply double-click the handle for the section
you want to expand, and Windows will stretch out that area
and contract the others to display as many buttons or
icons as possible.  Double-click a second time, and the
same area contracts.

2) FANTASTIC FILE FIND!  "What’s Happening?" [113 Kb/EXE]

"What’s Happening in Here?" is a nice little utility that
displays all programs that are currently running on your
computer.  If you’d like to get an idea of what’s going
on inside your machine, you’ll find WHIH will list each
active program and it’s associated modules by name and
path, company name, product version, and a short
description.

Try this handy little application and find out "What’s
Happening" today!

3) SEEN THESE SITES?  "Be Famous/Toaster Appreciation"

Is it time for your "15 minutes of fame", and are you
prepared to deal with the rigors of stardom?  Don’t
have the time or skills to actually DO anything that

4) EMAIL FUNNIES "Desktop Stress Reliever" [603 Kb/EXE]

The other afternoon while wrestling with a particularly
nasty software uninstall, this file hit my mailbox at just
the right moment.  Named an unembellished "Desktop Games"
by its developer, I prefer to think of this clever little
program as another great Desktop Stress Reliever.

You get it all with this toy: flamethrower, paintball gun,
machine gun, chainsaw, and 5 more.  Realistic graphics
and hilarious sound effects will have you “burning” through
your work in no time!

5) The MOUS Hole - "Format Painter"

The Format Painter tool is probably the handiest tool
Microsoft provided in the Office package.  It can be a real
timesaver when you’re formatting and reformatting a
document, and you have several items (blocks of text,
cells, objects) that you want to format exactly the same.
Once you’ve formatted a single item, use the Format Painter
to quickly apply the same format to other items.

The Format Painter icon sits to the right of the Paste Icon
on the Standard toolbar, and looks like a paintbrush.

This is a dual-purpose icon – its behavior will change
depending on whether you single-click or double-click it.

  I) Start by selecting and formatting the first item.  If
     you’re copying paragraph formats, make sure you
     select the paragraph mark at the end of the paragraph.
     Leave everything selected after formatting.

 II) a) If you have only one item you want to format like
     the first, single-click the Format Painter; or
     b) if you’ve multiple items you want to format like
     the first, double-click the Format Painter.
 
     **The cursor will become an I-beam
        with a paintbrush attached

III) Click-and-drag over the text you want to format,
     to apply the desired format (alternately, double-
     click the object or cell)

IV) a) If you’ve set the Format Painter for single-use
     you’re finished!  or
     b) If you’ve set the format for multiple uses, repeat
     step 3 for each additional item you wish to format.
     The Format Painter will remain on as you format
     each item.

V) When you’ve completed all multiple-item formatting,
     you must turn off the tool by once again
     single-clicking the Format Painter icon.
