1) Peeking thru WINDOWS "Time for
New Wallpaper?"
Did you know that Microsoft gave you the ability to
"borrow" just about any graphic you see on the Net
and use it for your wallpaper? You're
NOT limited
to the overused bubbles and blue rivets that are
included in your wallpaper listing.
Whether you lean towards sunsets on the beach, abstract
art, celebrity photos, or a favorite sports team, almost any
picture you see can grace your Desktop with 2 clicks:
I) Right-click on the picture or graphic
you want, and
II) Choose "Set As Wallpaper"
Further modify the display of your new wallpaper by
right-clicking the Desktop and choosing Properties.

2) FANTASTIC FILE FIND!
"ShowMHZ" [56 Kb/EXE]
ShowMHZ is a small DOS utility that is a quick
and easy reporter of the following info about your
computer: CPU model, internal clock speed,
MMX/SIMD technologies; and Pentium III serial number:

3) SEEN THESE SITES?
"BigPigGig/More Big Art"
Here in
so proud that we've permitted our downtown to become
overrun with hundreds of the hammy creatures.
at this month's first site. Read
up-to-date news about
The Pigs – "Tourists Steal Pig" (these are BIG pigs,
dear reader) and stay in touch with the great Sows vs.
Cows debate. See Pig Profiles that introduce you
to each pig, and the responsible artist.
Once you've
read one, you'll be bacon for more!

public art. Here's a few more links to

4) EMAIL FUNNIES "Whack a Mole" [90 Kb/EXE]
Not quite sure of the attraction, but there's something
mighty satisfying about whacking these little critters.
Choose the speed, number of moles, and how long you
want to smack at them – then have at it!

5) The MOUS Hole - "See Them All"
The default setting for Office 2000 finds the Standard
and Formatting toolbars sharing the same row – and you
can't see all the available buttons. I'm
a firm believer
of keeping all your choices in view – you're more apt to
use something (or at least experiment with it) if it's
continually in your line of view.
If you'd like to see all the buttons, all the time – move
your Formatting toolbar below the Standard:
I) Find the thin, gray vertical handle
(ridge) for the
Formatting toolbar – it should be
just left of your
Font box. Place your cursor on this handle, it will
turn into a four-way arrow.
II) Click-and-drag the toolbar straight
down and off the
Standard toolbar row.
III) Slowly drag your Formatting toolbar back up towards
the Standard. Your Formatting toolbar should
"snap"
into place. Reposition as desired, again using the
handle.
Use this method to reposition any toolbar that might
place itself inconveniently.

6) THEY SAID IT
"My
fellow Americans, I am pleased to tell you I just
signed legislation which outlaws
bombing begins in five minutes"
- Ronald Reagan, during 1984 radio test
- broadcast live

7) HODGEPODGE
A follow-up to the article on Amazon.com's practice of
variable pricing and privacy issues is below.
Amazon
apologizes for there "marketing tests" and issues refunds
to their customers:

This week I've stocked the Basement with a wild senior
who has a great philosophy and a tale of 4-year-olds that
need the "right" reason to play with their toy guns (to put
down a pretend sick horse is ok; to play cops and robbers
is not.) Your weekly dessert of
strangeness at:

My standard "Your Mileage May Vary" Caveat:
NFTB does not assume responsibility for your use of
information given. Tips are tested on a machine with
Windows 98 and Office 2000 Professional installed.
As I am firmly convinced that all systems are unique little
creatures in and of themselves, any given tip or suggestion
might just not be available to you. Why? Murphy Rules!
All advice should be weighed against your own abilities
and circumstances and applied accordingly. It is up
to you, the reader, to determine if advice is safe and
suitable for your current situation.
