1) Peeking thru WINDOWS "Menus to
Order"
From a reader question: "I've added so many new programs
to my Start menu that it's cluttered and disorganized. Is
there a quick way to sort this menu?" Angie H.
If you're running Windows 98 or above, there is. Simply
open the menu you want to sort, then right-click and choose
Sort by Name. Like types will sort
together folders with
folders, files with files.

2) FANTASTIC FILE FIND! "Microsoft
Reader [7098 Kb/EXE]
E-books, electronic copies of your favorite novels, are a
concept that is starting to take hold. Customers purchase
their e-books online and download them for use on a
monitor or hand-held device. There are
also "library"
sites available to download e-books for free! (see below)
With multiple competing "reader" software products
available, compatibility has been a serious issue for
e-book publishers. Microsoft has entered
into the
scrimmage with MS Reader, which might very well
become the new standard.
MS Reader offers a surprisingly simple interface that has a
few nice bells and whistles easy view customization, a
quick and intuitive find feature, word lookup/dictionary
(be sure to download the Encarta Pocket Dictionary after
you grab the Reader), highlighting, and it plays Audiobooks.
Annotation capabilities let you quickly return to bookmarks,
highlighting, notes, or drawings there's a "pencil" you
can use to add illustrations or notes to your e-books!

Virginia's Etext Center, including classic British and
American fiction, major authors, children's literature,
the Bible, Shakespeare, American history, African-
American documents, and much more. E-books
will
install automatically in Microsoft Reader when downloaded.

4) EMAIL FUNNIES "The Captain" [137 Kb/EXE]
I happened to catch an old Clint Eastwood movie,
"Heartbreak Ridge" recently and was struck by the
resemblance between his character and this week's
screen mate, The Captain.
Place some military might on your Desktop and add
the Captain to your deskmate collection today:

5) The MOUS Hole - "Off the Office Assistant"
ClipIt, the Paperclip Office Assistant and I have a
love-hate relationship. I love to hate
him. I think I
reached my limit the 3rd or 4th time I typed
"Dear SoandSo:" and he creepily popped up and inquired,
"It looks like you're writing a letter. Would you like
help?" I don't want anyone looking over my shoulder
when I write, electronic or no.
If you dislike ClipIt and all his other identities as much
as I do, shoo him away permanently like this:
I) If not immediately evident, get
ClipIt on-screen with
Help | Show Office Assistant
II) Right-click ClipIt, choose Options,
then click the
Options tab
III) Remove the check from the Use Office Assistant option,
then click OK.
Sometimes I'll even bring him back (Help | Show Office
Assistant) just to banish him once more!

6) THEY SAID IT
"If
the Government is big enough to give you everything you
want, it is big enough to take away
everything you have.
- Gerald Ford

7) HODGEPODGE
Serendipity takes a bus in this week's Photo Funny,
and our Bozo is a guy who left more than his fingerprints
behind during a botched robbery attempt.
