1) Peeking thru WINDOWS
"StartUp Bypass"
Take a look on your Start Program menu and you'll find
a folder named StartUp. Inside the StartUp
folder are all
the programs that Windows automatically runs when you
boot up.
You might find that you need to bypass the loading of these
files for some reason - diagnostic purposes, or maybe you
just need to boot up quickly. Here's how:
As your system boots up, watch the screen for the Windows
hourglass/arrow cursor. As soon as it
appears, depress and
hold your Ctrl key until your Desktop becomes visible, then
release. All StartUp
programs will be ignored.
If you later find you need one of the bypassed programs,
they can be run post-boot. Simply double
click the
appropriate icon in the StartUp folder.

2) FANTASTIC FILE FIND! "EniG.” [256 Kb/EXE]
This week's find is elementary, Dear Watsons.
Periodically, I like to offer a file that is useful for the
learned amongst us – such as EniG., Periodic Table
of Elements 2.4.
EniG.
contains the basic data about each element, in five
languages. It shows visually the change of physical condition
with the change of temperature, which is configurable. It
also contains a calculating module that calculates the mole
mass of compounds. A
very nicely crafted Table that should
be in everyone's reference folder.

3) SEEN THESE SITES? "I in
Pi/Dehydrated H2O"
You don't need a Private Investigator to find out if you're
in Pi! Why? Because this utilitarian
little site will
search the first 1,254,543 digits of Pi (you remember Pi
from grade school math, don't you?) for your birth date
and tell you where in Pi it is. I'm 108,
623 digits in...
it's so nice to know one's place in the world:

Stop
drinking tap water! Stop drinking well
water! Refuse
to touch water from desalination plants!
And remember that
mountain spring water is a disaster waiting to happen!
Insist on only one natural substance... Dehydrated water.
Pure, natural, dehydrated water - for the same folks that
got the CyberTan:

4) EMAIL FUNNIES "FlyMe" [150 Kb/EXE]
"What's that buzz, tell me what's a-happenin?'"
A new desk mate for your collection this week. You just
might find it more fun adding this one to a coworker's
Desktop, rather than running it on your own!

5) The MOUS Hole - "Neat Columns"
After you create newspaper columns in Word,
to produce crisp, professional looking columns:
1) Justify the text – select all text, then click the
Justify icon (or Format | Paragraph
| Alignment tab |
Justified);
2) Turn on Hyphenation – Tools | Language | Hyphenation,
turn on the option to Automatically
hyphenate document,
and click the OK button. This will clean up those
large, white "gaps" in a
line that will occur when text
is justified.
You may find you need to install the Hyphenation feature
(using your Office installation disk) if it was not installed
during the initial setup.

and furthermore always carry a small snake." - W. C. Fields

7) HODGEPODGE
How private are your computer communications while
at work? You might be surprised! Here's an excellent
article on the subject:

~~~
In the May 31st issue of NFTB (available online in the
Archives if you missed it), I recommended a fine Internet
security utility, ZoneAlarm. ZoneLabs has
released an
upgrade, version 2.1.44, that you should consider
getting, whether you're a current user or are just
concerned about the safety of your computing experience:
I found an offer for a cell phone, hands-free attachment
that can be yours, free of charge! Click
the Photo Funny
link in The Basement to check it out. Thwn, be sure to
read about the newest bug to hit German computer users –
My standard "Your Mileage May Vary" Caveat:
NFTB does not assume responsibility for your use of
information given. Tips are tested on a machine with
Windows 98 and Office 2000 Professional installed.
As I am firmly convinced that all systems are unique little
creatures in and of themselves, any given tip or suggestion
might just not be available to you. Why? Murphy Rules!
All advice should be weighed against your own abilities
and circumstances and applied accordingly. It is up
to you, the reader, to determine if advice is safe and
suitable for your current situation.
