1) Peeking thru WINDOWS  "Install Windows Components"

If you didn't personally install Windows on your computer,
you might find there are optional features of Windows that
were not installed.  To explore your available Windows
components and see what might be available:

  I) Click Start | Settings | Control Panel

II) Double-click the Add/Remove Programs icon

III) Select the Windows Setup tab

IV) Select the category you'd like to examine.

 V) Click the Details button

VI) You'll see a listing of available programs.  Select
(or deselect) as desired, then click OK

VII) You'll be prompted to insert your Windows CD, then
the selected files will be copied for your use.

2) FANTASTIC FILE FIND!  "Eraser 4.1  [962 Kb/EXE]

Most people have some data that they would rather not share
with others - passwords, personal information, classified
work documents, financial records, and diaries.  You might
think when you delete these files from your computer
they're gone for good.  Wrong!

When you delete a file, the operating system does not really
remove the file from the disk; it only removes the reference
of the file from the file allocation table. The file remains
on the disk until another file is created over it, and even
then, it might be possible to recover data by studying the
magnetic fields on the disk platter surface!

The only way to make sure those unwanted files are truly
deleted is to use a utility program such as this week's
find – Eraser.  Eraser is an advanced security tool for
Windows, which allows you to completely remove sensitive
data from your hard drive by overwriting it several times
with carefully selected patterns.  You can drag and drop
files and folders to the on-demand eraser, or use the
integrated scheduler to program overwriting as part of
routine maintenance.

3) SEEN THESE SITES?  "Sky High Eye View/Lissajous"

Care to see what your house looks like from a satellite
160 miles above the surface?  US residents can enter their
address for an aerial view of their residence.  Everyone
can view snaps of major world cities.  See what the eye-in-
the-sky does!  Visit the GlobalExplorer Viewer site here:

 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=

Absolutely mesmerizing.  This site draws you into a truly
interactive experience as you manipulate Lissajous figures.
What's a Lissajous figures?
One of the best examples can
be found in the opening sequence of The Outer Limits TV
series. ("Do not attempt to adjust your picture--we are
controlling the transmission.") The pattern of criss-cross
lines is actually a Lissajous figure.

The Lissajous Lab gives you an oscilloscope-like interface
where you control x,y, and hue frequencies and sampling
rates to create intriguing patterns.  The more you
experiment, the more captivated you'll become!

4) EMAIL FUNNIES "Bad Day" [417 Kb/MPE]

After experiencing a particularly frustrating two hours
wrestling with a recalcitrant computer, I had to chuckle
in empathy with the subject of this week's funny – a video
clip of a cubicle resident who evidently had all he could
take!

5) The MOUS Hole - "Font Size Keyboard Control"

Here's a tip for those times you're working in either Word
or PowerPoint and find it's time to change a font size.
Rather than sliding your cursor up to the old familiar
dropdown box, try this -

Select the text your want to change, then:

-- Ctrl + ] to increase your font size one point at a time,
-- Ctrl + [ to decrease one point at a time;
-- Ctrl + > to increase one font size class, and
-- Ctrl + < to decrease one font class at a time.

6) THEY SAID IT

"Democracy is the recurrent suspicion that more than
half of the people are right more than half of the time.”
  - E.B. White

7) HODGEPODGE

When was the last time you treated your vehicle to a good
cleaning?  Take a gander at this week's Photo Funny to see
what could happen if you don't remove that dirty buildup.
Then see the Bizarro feature for the latest in technology
that moves the human body one step closer to becoming
another cog in the machine.
