1) Peeking thru WINDOWS  "EZ-View Extension"

Last week's Fantastic File Find caused some trouble for
a couple of readers.  The installation file instructed:
"...right-click on the .INF file named RBTray and click
Install."  The problem arose because there were two files
named RBTray in the Installation folder, and under most
folks' Windows configurations the 3-letter file extension
(ending) is not visible.

While you COULD turn on the extensions for viewing all the
time [ Start | Settings | Folder Options; Folder Tab; turn
off option to Hide folder extensions...], I don't recommend
it – this makes the renaming of files routinely more difficult.

So, how DO you tell what a file's extension is?  Open the
Run window [Start | Run], tap Delete to clear any previous
entry, and then drag your unknown file icon into the Run
command line.  The full path (file's specific location in
your computer) will appear in the command line, at the
very end will be the file's 3-letter extension!

2) FANTASTIC FILE FIND!  "Christmas MIDIs"  [368 Kb/EXE]

I've gathered this collection of 30+
MIDI music files over
the past three years and I'm pleased to be able to share
them with you.  "So This Is Christmas", "Frosty", "Jingle
Bells", and the infamous classic "Grandma Got Run Over"
are just a few of the selections included.

3) SEEN THESE SITES?  "Alien Messages/BeatSymphony"

Take a tissue,
you'll have tears in your eyes after
visiting the Alien Message Board, whose motto reads:
"
Serving Earth's Alien Population for 1/1000 of a
millennium."

During the last few years a large number of aliens have
visited the Earth. Some have even taken residence on this
quaint little planet. They have a need to communicate, inform
and advertise amongst themselves.  The
Alien Message Board
attempts to fill this niche.  Note: Telepaths can download
the AMB using the Telepathic File Transfer feature.

One of my favorites from Christmas last year is just as
innovative today!  BeatSymphony, who bill themselves as
"Steam driven technopop for the new millennium", present
a fabulous animated music video that is a guaranteed
toe-tapping tune for the holidays. Double-dog dare ya to
not smile after watching this one!

Trim a virtual tree with this week's offering.  Create
a beautiful card that you can print or send.  Choose from
multiple decorations in each of seven categories – bells,
icicles, stars, big and small balls, candles and tops.

With an easy to use interface and realistic appearing
graphics, this is a fun program for kids of all ages:

5) The MOUS Hole - "SAVE"

It takes one-quarter of a second to save a file using the
Ctrl-S combination in Office products, yet I routinely field
inquiries from people looking for a way to "recover" a
"lost" (read unsaved) document or presentation.  In most
cases, the loss is permanent.

A common misconception is the assumption that the software
is saving the file for you – "I saw a message in the Status
Bar that said, "Word is AutoSaving and thought..."

True, if the AutoRecover feature is turned on, periodically
your files will be saved to the AutoRecover directory.  This
IS NOT a substitute for regular "saves" on your part!

Here's what Word Help says on the subject: "If your computer
hangs (stops responding) or you lose power unexpectedly,
Word opens the AutoRecover file the next time you start
Word. The AutoRecover file MAY contain unsaved information
that would otherwise be lost from your original document. If
your original document was damaged, you MAY be able to
recover information from the AutoRecover file.  IMPORTANT:
AutoRecover does not replace the Save command, you must
still save your document when you finish working on it."

In my experience, the likelihood that AutoRecover WILL
recover the file is in direct inverse proportion to the
amount of time and effort you have invested!  Save yourself
untold hours of labor and SAVE OFTEN!

6) THEY SAID IT

"So when George Bailey got his life back and the normal
universe was restored, what happened to those angels who
got their wings when the bar cash register rang in the
alternate universe in which George was never born?"
- Jonathan Colan

7) HODGEPODGE

If you've been using AdAware to guard against spyware,
(as first discussed in the August 23, 2000 issue of NFTB,
still available online in The Basement) you'll want to grab
the newest update of this great free utility!  Lavasoft has
changed AdAware to an engine/data file model (similar
to popular virus-check programs) for easier updating in
the future.  And if you don't have AdAware, why not? You
might be shocked to find out what's lurking on your
machine.  Download AA here:

Our Bizarro story this week gives us a peek at crime and
prevention, Chinese-style; while the Photo Funny shows
quite definitively that you can't haul 3000 pounds of
lumber and concrete with a VW Jetta!  Read all about it
and browse through the boxes in The Basement:
