It's my pleasure to greet new readers to The Basement,
and to welcome back all of you who've been here before!
*AOL readers, your links can be found at the bottom.*

1) Windows Tip -
"Fast Arrangements"
When you're working with multiple windows and have a
need for a bit of order, try this tip to selectively arrange
your open windows. Using the buttons on
the Taskbar,
click on the first window you want to organize.
Hold down
your Ctrl key and select the other windows you want to use.
Continue to hold down your Ctrl key and right-click on one
of the selected buttons; choose either Tile Vertically or
Tile Horizontally.
~ ~ ~
Even more powerful - There is a "Minimize All Windows"
command available by right-clicking the Taskbar, but no
"Maximize All Windows". Modify
our first tip to accomplish
the same aim: Hold down your Ctrl key
while you click on
each window button on the Taskbar, then right-click on a
selected button and choose Maximize. Every
window will
immediately open fully maximized!

2) File Find! -
"TweakAll 2.0" [991
Kb/EXE]
Note: This week's file find is the BETA (pre-final) version
of TweakAll 2.0, albeit a well-behaved beta version during
my testing. As with all programs that
modify the contents
of your computer, you should back up critical files and READ
the documentation before using.
That said, check out this program. The authors have changed
the interface significantly from previous versions, switching
to a modular concept. Download the main
engine, then choose
which add-ins you'd like to attach. The options available are
plentiful, but you won't need to download features you won't
use.
The new option I found most valuable was the ability to find
and remove "Invalid Add\Remove Entries" - these are entries
that don't show up in the Windows Add\Remove list. You now
can have an additional tool to completely remove unwanted
programs - especially ones that don't show up though "normal"
Add\Remove channels:

3) Sites-Seeing -
"AFDB\Mother of All Excuses"
In the interest of Public Safety, I feel obligated to pass
this one on to my readers. This
non-commercial site is
dedicated to spreading the word about the AFDB and how it
can help the average person. Here you will find a description
of AFDBs, how to make and use them, and general information
about related subjects.
What's an AFDB? Well, click and find
out! and be careful -
THEY are watching…

Sorry I didn’t get this to you earlier, but my house was on
fire, and I couldn’t get in because all the fire equipment
was blocking the door... I mean, I wasn’t feeling well and
I took Nyquil at
I really meant was my uncle was dying and I needed to beat
my cousin to the power tools.
These are just a few of the often hilarious excuses you’ll
find at our second site. Work excuses,
school excuses, police
excuses, dating excuses, dieting excuses, tax excuses -
whatever situation you find yourself in, you’ll find a good
excuse among the thousands here!

4) Email Funny -
"Kilroy" [53 Kb/EXE]
Another friend for your Desktop this week - particularly for
those who remember Kilroy, of "Kilroy was here" fame. You
may even be one of the myriad numbers who doodle Kilroy's
portrait while waiting "on hold". Now you can own an animated
Kilroy, one who is mostly a bashful sort.
Note: Kilroy takes a minute or so after you double-click his
(invisible) icon before he makes his first appearance. After
that, he'll pop up unobtrusively every now and again, just
to see how you're doing:

5) MOUS Tips -
"Custom Clean"
The Spelling and Grammar Check ("Spellcheck") feature of
MS Office provides users with the capability to Add words
that are not "known" to the dictionary. This is especially
helpful when dealing with proper names, jargon, and slang
that you might choose to use in your writing.
Problems can arise, however, when a *misspelled* word is
accidentally added to the dictionary.
Once a word is added,
the Spellcheck will ignore it forevermore.
Your first line of
defense: double-check all spellings *before* clicking that
Add button!
How can you correct your dictionary, if a misspelled word
sneaks in despite your best efforts?
Follow these steps:
I)
Open Word.
II)
Choose Tools | Options | Spelling & Grammar tab.
III) Click Dictionaries button, then
(make sure CUSTOM.DIC
is the selected dictionary)
click the Edit button.
IV)
You may get a dialog box that discusses the shutdown
of automatic spell checking,
click OK if you do.
V)
Word will open CUSTOM.DIC. Delete
any misspelled words
from this file, then save and
close.
VI)
You now must turn automatic spell checking back on.
Select Tools | Options |
Spelling & Grammar tab, then
VII)
Turn on the option to "Check spelling as you type", OK

7) Hodgepodge
Here's a Valentine to you, Dear Readers; enjoy a bit of
history about some omnipresent "sweethearts":
http://www.infoplease.com/spot/candyhearts1.html
By now you've most likely heard several times over about
the new "Anna" virus. With a
bit of luck, and good preventative
practices, you managed to avoid being stricken by this latest
scourge. I often get asked when speaking to groups - "Why
would anyone create a virus?" You
can read one virus creator’s
reasons in this week's Bizarro article: an interview with
Onel de Guzman who is the (suspected) author of last year's email
terror, the "L*ve B*g" virus.
And for this week's Photo Funny?
A very unusual warning sign ...
