1)  Windows Tips  -  "Clear The Clipboard"

One common activity performed daily by most computer users
can actually routinely slow down your computer's performance
if you're running memory-intensive programs, or operating on a
machine with a limited amount of memory.  Cut-and-Paste or
Copy-and-Paste operations can place large blocks of text and/or
graphics in the Windows clipboard.  This may be slowing the
operation of your computer - because the contents of the
clipboard are not removed when you paste; rather they remain
on the clipboard until something else replaces them!  Your
memory continues to carry this excess "baggage" until you
clear it out!

If your computer does seem a bit sluggish after a Cut/Copy/Paste,
try this:  Select any small word and Copy it.  This will replace the
large item in your Clipboard with something much smaller -
and perhaps provide a much-needed boost in performance!

2)  File Find!  -  "Extended Character Map"  [198 Kb/EXE]

This week: Extended Character Map.  ECM acts like the
standard Windows Character Map, used to view typeface
characters.  The difference?  This program displays sample
characters much larger than Microsoft chose to show you -
no more squinting at those Webding characters trying to
figure out "is that a rocket ship or a hypodermic needle?"

3)  Sites-Seeing  -  "Escher Art\Historyplace"

A fifth-grade teacher introduced me to the wonders of
M. C. Escher's work many, many moons ago, and the
hours I've spent trying to reconcile his not-of-this-world
pictures are quite possibly a contributor to my quirky world
view.  Thanks, Miss Verhoff!

Thanks, also, to Brendan DJ Murphy for this high quality
gallery of Escher's artwork.  Spend some time with Escher
and you'll see the world from a whole new perspective:

You don't need to be a student of history to appreciate our
second site.  Whether it's the photos of child laborers and
migratory farm workers, or the comprehensive timelines of
the major conflicts in which the
US has been involved, or
the examination of genocide in the 20th century; you'll find
a new insight into today's conditions by examining the past.

The majority of the information you'll find here is oriented
towards US history; however I found the photograph of the
Shanghai baby who was one of the few survivors of a past
conflict, particularly moving:

4)  Email Funny  -  "BoxWorld" [78 Kb/EXE]

I have a nice, little noncompetitive logic game for you
this week - BoxWorld.  The concept?  Your tiny martial
artist is trapped in rooms (reminds me of the Basement,
matter of fact) containing boxes.  Your task? Move the
boxes to their assigned storage spot.  Your reward?
Another room - there's no scoreboard here:

Komputer Karma - where can you help fight breast cancer,
give comfort to children with AIDS and vitamin deficiencies,
assist landmine victims, feed the hungry and save the rainforest?

A few clicks WILL make a difference - make The Hunger Site
and its sister sites a daily stop!  You'll help others and feel
better too!

5)  MOUS Tips  -  "Don't Run With AutoShapes in Your Hand"

One of my daughter's hobbies is creating photo albums
of friends and family.  She recently introduced me to a
must-have tool for this activity - the scalloped scissors.
Unbeknownst to me, these scissors, which come with all
sorts of different cutting edges, are an absolute necessity
for the continuing happiness of today's modern teenager
(or so I was led to believe...)

You can create the same type of effect with pictures on your
computer using the AutoShapes tool.  Try this:

  I)  Open Word or PowerPoint.

II)  Click the AutoShapes button on the Drawing toolbar,
then Stars and Banners, then select one of the shapes
in the next menu, for example "16-point star".
(No Drawing Toolbar?  Select View | Toolbars | Drawing)

III)  Click-and-drag diagonally from the upper left to the lower
right to create your star.  Modify the star's size/shape
as desired with the object handles ("square boxes")

IV)  Right-click on the star, choose Format AutoShape.

  V)  From the Color & Lines tab, select the Fill Color
         dropdown box, then Fill Effects.

VI)  Click the Picture tab, then the Select Picture button.
Browse to your desired picture; click Insert, then
         OK and OK.

Use different AutoShapes to create varied style "cuts" for
all photos - for that distinctive look!

7)  Hodgepodge

All is not rosy in a certain discount store's garden center,
where one green thumb became red - disclosed in this week's
Bizarro feature.  Then, sorry guys! - This Photo Funny is for the
ladies - and get out your email address books, you're definitely
going to want to share this one with a Virtual Photo Funny Card
to your friends!
