1) Windows Tips -
"Easy Expansions and Contractions"
If you use Windows Explorer to manage your files, you're
familiar with the boxed "+" and "-" symbols next to many
directories. These are used to expand and contract any
subfolders contained therein. Rather
than clicking on the
"+/-" symbols for each subfolder you need to expand or
contract, use this tip to open/close ALL of a folder's
subfolders at once: Select the folder you want to control,
then tap the " * " key to expand all of it's subfolders at
once; or use the " - " key to contract that branch completely.

2) File Find! -
"SysTrayPlay" [255
Kb/EXE]
If you're a fan of MP3's, you'll want to check out this low
overhead, multi-featured MP3 player. No
fancy animations
or graphics results in a compact display and minimal use of
processor resources; yet it contains a nice playlist editor,
equalizer, MP3 information editor, and a few goodies I'll
leave for you to discover on your own.
Even if you have a favorite player installed, STP is worth
a look. And if you've never tried MP3's,
this makes a great
starter player. Try it today!

3) Sites-Seeing -
"Evan & Jeanine\Anti-Scam"
"Evan Chan was murdered"
"Jeanine was the key"
Jeanine who? Jeanine Salla who is credited as "Sentient
machine therapist" in the trailer for "A.I." - the soon-to-be-
released movie by Stephen Spielberg,
While the merits of the
movie itself remain to be seen, the marketing effort supporting
it is unprecedented in its use of multiple media, especially
the Internet.
An entire "alternate future" world exists on the Web now,
for you to pursue the mystery of Evan Chan's demise and the
Jeanine Salla connection. The are
hundreds of web pages
worth of clues - a robot coalition page, a corresponding
anti-coalition page, even a site to purchase your own
"companion"; phone numbers to call, faxes to receive, email
addresses to correspond with; red herrings and mini-mysteries -
there's never been any diversion online that comes close to
the complexity of this game!
There are several places you can start, I've included three
below. The first will take you to a
Google search page for
Jeanine Salla - browse a few of the pages it turns up to whet
your interest. Then, take a look at link
number two, The Trail,
a regularly updated guide to all the websites, emails, faxes
and phone calls within the game. The third, The Guide, is a
complete walkthrough of the game to date.
Happy hunting!

If you're wise (and of course you are, you read NFTB!) you
hit the old delete key every time a spam email lands in your
Inbox. Offers for "cookie
cutters", "your own money-making
site", and "top secret laundry stones" get pitched quicker
than it takes to download them.
But... what if you just happen to read one - and it sounds
reasonable? Heck, as a matter of fact,
it sounds pretty gosh
darn good. And, who couldn't use a few
extra bucks each
month, especially when they'll "do all the work for you"??
Well, if you're ever struck by a momentary fit of insanity
and you DO seriously consider one of these fly-by-night
schemes, do yourself a favor and stop by this site for some
straight words about the more popular scams that are being
played out on the Net. Your pocketbook will thank you!

~ ~ ~
And speaking of scams, have you heard about Kaycee Nichole?
She was a 19-year old young lady who fought leukemia, her
struggles chronicled on the Web. She
received hundreds of
emails, cards, gifts and donations.
Thousands of supporters
were saddened on May 14th when it was reported that she
had died - but she never existed!
Another sad story of deception, gullibility, misplaced trust
and twisted motives, it should serve as a warning to those
who are apt to give monetarily or emotionally to others on
the Net without a thorough investigation:

4) Email Funny -
"Push Your Luck!" [69 Kb/EXE]
Bringing one out of the Basement vaults this week. This is
an addicting little DOS-based dice game that's found a home
on every computer I've had in the past ten years! Bet you
can't play just once!

5) MOUS Tips -
"Printing & Copying Single Worksheets"
Dipping into the Basement mailbag: reader Irene B. said,
"Thanks for the tip on recoloring clipart. I'll have to try that
one. Also, I have a question for you
regarding Excel. If I
have a workbook with several worksheets, how can I print just
one of the worksheets, or copy just one of the worksheets to
a disk? Can you help me out with this?"
Sure, Irene! Here's how:
To print a single worksheet, choose File | Print.
In the lower left corner is the option to print the Active
Sheet(s) Choose that, then Print.
To copy a single sheet to a new file, choose Edit | Move or
Copy Sheet. Where it says To Book: select (New Book)
BE SURE you then select the "make copy" box at the
bottom, before hitting OK. Save your new
file to disk.

6) They Said It
"Only after the last tree has been cut down, only after
the last river has been poisoned, only after the last fish
has been caught, only then will you find that money
cannot be eaten." - Cree Indian prophecy

7) Hodgepodge
The "Face on Mars" has been a part of pop imagery for over
a quarter century, ever since the first picture was taken by
Viking I in 1976. Purportedly an alien
artifact, NASA recently
released the highest resolution photo to date (including a
massive 5+ meg .GIF file) that shows it's true identity:

How about doing the old Basement Master a favor this week
and giving him a vote at:
http://www.fun-lists.com/cgi-bin/g.cgi?103.30.0
BTW, I'm putting this down here in the Hodgepodge section,
as my daughter tells me "no one reads it when you make it
look like an ad." True?
~ ~ ~
Last week's Photo Funny brought the following comment from
reader John P. - "I'm not a fan of dressing up animals to look
like people and the attendant discomfort (to say the least)
imposed on the animal." With all
due respect, and at the risk
of another unsubscribe request, this week's Bizarro item
(complete with photo) illustrates that dressing up animals
sometimes DOES have an altruistic purpose, even when the
animal is discomforted. Check out the
(potentially) explosive
Photo Funny, too!
